How to build warm, earthy browns

A brown with more red feels different from a brown built around yellow or blue. Rather than searching for a universal brown, decide which neighbor should remain perceptible in the final mix.

For a warm, earthy result, begin with an orange-leaning base, reduce saturation until it can sit comfortably beside a neutral, then deepen it with a cooler shadow instead of only adding black.

Earthy palettes work when they have both density and relief. Add a pale sand or chalk tone, a grounded dark, and one living note—leaf, rust, or faded sky—to keep the brown from becoming a wall of sameness.

The same principle works in a UI: reserve the darkest brown for structure, not every label, and let the lightest tone do more than decorate the background.
